About the Event

Financing Smart Growth is a timely topic. As developers and local governments become more and more willing to take the leap and try Smart Growth, issues of financing become critical. As you can imagine, the current lending environment -- which tends to keep residential and commercial financing fully separate -- greatly complicates the realization of mixed-use development proposals.

Smart Financing for Smart Growth drew more than 200 professionals and government officials for highly informative presentations and interactive panel discussions. It has earned extraordinarily positive feedback. We hope you were among the many who had the opportunity to attend the informative sessions and network with leaders in the field.

U.S. Congressman Steve Israel and Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi highlighted the importance of advancing Smart Growth development on Long Island. The needs are multi-faceted, but clear – whether we're talking about improving our tax base, providing for the next generation's housing needs, retaining crucial businesses, preserving our remaining open spaces or ensuring our nation's defense – it is critical that we improve the quality of growth and development on Long Island. The key to this is fostering mixed-use and mixed-income development in appropriate areas.

An informative presentation and panel of local experts helped crystallize not only how this can be done, but the benefits to both developers and financial institutions. Chris Leinberger of Arcadia Land Use Company provided a wealth of information about how mixed use development is being approached nation-wide, complete with case studies illustrating its profitability. An expert panel moderated by John Coffey of Commerce Bank provided an informed response and useful information about programs and incentives available on Long Island.
