Bay Shore Marina Visioning Moves Forward; State Sen. Owen Johnson and Town Officials Secure $1.5 Million Grant for Marina Improvements
On Wednesday, August 29, 2007, town officials and residents from the Town of Islip came to the Bay Shore Marina to celebrate the achievement of the first phase in its renovations. The completion of 1, 372 linear feet of steel bulkheading will protect the marina, preserving Bay Shore’s formerly underutilized asset.
The renovations were made possible through a $1.5 million grant secured by New York State Senator Owen H. Johnson (4th Senate District, Babylon), Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. Speaking at the ribbon cutting ceremony, Senator Johnson remarked that he was "pleased to secure [this] funding so that these critical upgrades could be made." In addition to the recent completion of bulkhead repairs, the Bay Shore Marina is receiving new decking, sidewalk upgrades, benches, and making improvements to handicap accessibility.
Numerous members of the community came out to show support for the renovations as Councilman Steven J. Flotteron, and others who participated in the process, cut the ribbon to the boardwalk. Councilman Flotteron spoke on the importance of the marina and the imperative to create a destination and recreation space for all residents.
In May, the Town Board and Vision Long Island conducted a three-part "visioning process" on how to improve the marina beyond the necessary infrastructure enhancements. Through public hearings and gathering of community support and input, a consensus emerged on how to best enrich the marina. The initial repairs to the foundation of the marina are the first steps towards future improvements.
Phase 2 will include sprinkler park, new concession stand, beach and recreational improvements, and stronger connections to the area restaurants.
