Dear members of the LI Smart Growth Working Group:

Each year, we look forward to the LI Index report and the information compiled by the Rauch Foundation.  This year's version, released tomorrow in conjunction with the Regional Plan Association, is entitled Places to Grow: An Analysis of the Potential for Transit Accessible Housing and Jobs in Long Island's Downtowns and Station Areas.  The report will provide data on varying locations for growth across Long Island from a capacity point of view.  The bulk of the report will address the opportunities in existing or emerging downtown areas.  Just to keep expectations clear, the report will not address the opportunities for growth on commercial corridors or new town centers.

The official launch of the 2010 Long Island Index will be held Thursday January 21st from 8:00-9:30am at Adelphi University.  Galina Tahchieva, a fellow member of the Congress for the New Urbanism and partner at the design firm DPZ will be part of the presentation along with the LI Index Director Ann Golub.

Many Vision Long Island Board members and supporters will be in attendance but we just recieved word yesterday that due to the size of the room, additional folks could be invited.  Please RSVP to the Rauch Foundation at 516-873-9808

Hope to see you there and, if not, you can read SmartTalk, our weekly e-mail newsletter for event and report details.

The official language and description of the event is below:

indexThe Long Island Index 2010 report, Places to Grow, An Analysis of the Potential for Transit-Accessible Housing and Jobs in Long Island's Downtown and Station Areas, prepared by the Regional Plan Association (RPA), shows there is enormous potential for development and growth in existing downtown and railroad station areas - roughly 8,300 acres of unbuilt land in over 150 village downtowns and rail station areas.

As Long Islanders discuss the future for the region, the question being confronted is: how much and what type of new development is both desirable and achievable?

Several other suburban regions have found ways to grow their economic base by building their downtowns. Our goal is to maintain the suburban character of Long Island while keeping housing costs and taxes affordable. "The region must find a way to achieve this balance," asserts Rauch Foundation President Nancy Douzinas. "Managed growth in the downtowns has been a revenue generator in other parts of the country with greater job growth, lower property taxes, fewer cars and better environmental outcomes. Long Island could certainly use all of that!"
