Source: Town of Brookhaven AA/EEO Contact: Town of Brookhaven Office of Supervisor One Independence Hill Farmingville, NY 11738 Fax: 631-451-6677 SUMMARY: Town of Brookhaven, Long Island NY, a municipality of approximately 450,000 residents is seeking a Commissioner of Planning who is creative and highly motivated to engage projects involving land use related to open space, affordable housing, transportation, Smart Growth initiatives, downtown and community revitalizations, and land preservation. The position entails plan development, facilitating public processes, and working with a variety of stakeholders. As the director of the planning team, this professional will bring an analytical approach to Town projects, plans, policies and practices.
Specific interest and experience with community visioning, downtown development & revitalization, and mixed-use planning highly desirable Public presentation and project management skills are essential. The planning staff consists of 75 employees and is located within the Department of Planning and Development.
Education: Master’s Degree in Urban Regional Planning or similar field.
Experience: 5+ years experience in the administration of local codes and ordinances. Progressively responsible local government planning experience and supervisory experience preferred. AICP certification preferred.
Skills: Sound working knowledge of local codes and ordinances, current principles of planning practices and procedures, specifically with respect to local governments. Ability to establish and maintain professionally effective relationships with public and vendors, internal management and non-management employees, citizen representatives and Town or other governmental agency officials. Practices of researching planning issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting effective staff reports. Interpreting, applying and explaining complex laws and codes and regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence, procedure directives and grants. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of stakeholders, clients, community leadership, and the general public. Ability
